When Your Body Says Pause: Learning to Rest as an Act of Faithfulness
Something that happened during this busy season. My body finally said, "Enough," not in words, of course, but in the language bodies use: a racing heart, deep fatigue, a sudden inability to keep going at the pace I had been maintaining for weeks. So I'd like to share what God taught me through it, because it surprised me.
The Night Everything Slowed Down
While we were visiting Tom's sisters in a small town called Graeagle, preparing to celebrate with fireworks, a firehouse pancake breakfast, church, and a parade, I started experiencing episodes of atrial fibrillation. My heart was racing irregularly, and I was deeply fatigued. It knocked me for a loop.
The day after we got home, I met with a heart doctor. He put me on new medication and gave me options for surgery. We will be deciding which path to take after another heart test is completed.
I'm not sharing this for sympathy, although a prayer would be appreciated, but I'm sharing it because of what God taught me through it.
Too Busy to Listen
I had been going nonstop for weeks: Traveling, serving, hosting, volunteering, supporting. I loved every moment, but my body, the body God designed, was telling me something I had been too busy to hear. Somewhere along the way, I had started treating rest as optional, a luxury I couldn't afford when there was so much to do. I felt there were so many people counting on me, so many events on the calendar, so many commitments I had made in good faith.
But good faith commitments don't override the way God designed us, and my body knew that before my mind was willing to admit it.
What Jesus Said About Rest
Mark 6:31 (NLT) records Jesus saying to His disciples: "Let's go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile."
Notice who said this. It was Jesus, the One who had been healing, teaching, feeding multitudes, confronting religious leaders. The busiest Person in the New Testament said, "Let's rest awhile."
If Jesus needed to pause, why do I resist it so stubbornly? I think sometimes we treat rest as a sign of weakness, or worse, as disobedience. As if stopping means we don't trust God enough to keep going; as if exhaustion is a badge of honor that proves our dedication. But rest is not the opposite of faithfulness. Sometimes rest is faithfulness. It is trusting that God can manage the world without my constant activity. It is believing that the things I am not doing will be held by the One who never tires.
What Happened in the Pause
My body forced a pause I probably would not have taken voluntarily. In that pause, I heard the Lord more clearly than I had in weeks. It wasn't because He started speaking louder, but because I finally got quiet enough to listen.
That's the irony of an overwhelming season. We beg God to speak but we never slow down long enough to hear Him. We ask for direction while sprinting in the opposite direction of stillness. We pray for wisdom while ignoring the wisdom our own bodies are trying to impart.
The pause didn't solve everything. I'm still waiting on test results. I'm still praying about next steps. But something shifted in my spirit when I finally stopped. It wasn't a resolution but more like a settling, a reminder that I am not the one holding the world together. He is.
The Body as a Gift, Not an Obstacle
Maybe your body is saying something right now. Is there persistent fatigue, a lingering ache, a sense that you are running on fumes, a diagnosis that has changed your plans, or limitations you didn't choose and don't want? Please don't ignore it. Don't push through as if exhaustion is proof of devotion.
God did not design us to run without stopping. He designed us to flourish, and flourishing includes rest. The same God who commanded labor also commanded Sabbath. The same Jesus who healed the sick also withdrew to quiet places. The same Spirit who empowers ministry also whispers, "Be still."
Maybe the pause you're resisting is the very thing your soul needs most.
Reflection Questions
Is your body trying to tell you something you have been too busy to hear? What would it look like to pause, not as a failure but as an act of faithfulness?
Where have you been treating rest as optional rather than essential? What might change if you viewed it as obedience?
What would it look like to create space for stillness in the middle of your current season, not waiting for it to slow down but choosing to slow down within it?
A Prayer for This Moment
Lord, thank You for designing me with limits. Help me honor the body You gave me instead of pushing past what You intended. When You say "rest awhile," give me the humility to listen. And in the quiet, speak what I have been too busy to hear. Remind me that Your work continues even when I am still. In Jesus' name, Amen.
