When God Steps in Early: Trusting His Timing Before You Need It

When God Steps in Early: Trusting His Timing Before You Need It

Have you ever been so certain that something would fall through that you started making peace with disappointment, only for God to step in at the last moment?

That happened to Tom and me recently, and it reminded me that God doesn't always wait for us to hit rock bottom before He moves. Sometimes He opens doors we didn't even know existed.

I want to share what we learned about trusting God's timing, and how sometimes He intervenes before we've even voiced our prayer.

The Trip That Almost Didn't Happen

Tom and I had a trip planned with three other couples, something we had been looking forward to for almost a year. We'd saved, coordinated schedules, arranged work coverage, and counted down the days. Then reality intervened.

Tom discovered he had not one but two inguinal hernias that needed immediate attention. Surgery couldn't wait much longer, but the earliest available date was after our scheduled trip. We did the math and accepted what felt inevitable: the trip would have to be canceled.

We started making peace with losing what we'd invested emotionally and financially. We began telling people it wasn't happening. We were resigned. But God intervened.

An opening came up two months before our scheduled departure. A surgeon's slot opened unexpectedly. Tom had the surgery, recovered well, and we were able to go when the time came.

What We Learned: Intervention vs. Restoration

I've been thinking a lot about that word: intervened.

Sometimes God calms the storm after we're already wet. Sometimes He removes the obstacle after we've already tripped over it. And sometimes, in His kindness, He opens a door we didn't know existed before we even reached the wall.

Isaiah 41:10 (NLT) says: "Don't be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand."

Notice what God doesn't say. He doesn't say, "I will prevent every difficulty." He says, "I am with you." The promise is presence, not absence of trouble. Sometimes He does both. He steps in early, rearranges the timeline, and makes a way where there seemed to be none.

When Plans Look Impossible

Maybe you're facing something right now that looks impossible: a scheduling conflict; a health concern; a financial wall; a relationship that seems permanently strained. You've done the math, and the numbers don't work. You've already made peace with disappointment. You've started planning the "alternative."

I'm not going to tell you that God will always move the way He did for Tom and me. I don't know His plan for your specific situation. But I do know this:

  • He sees you

  • He is not late

  • Sometimes He is already working on a solution before you have even asked

The question is whether we will trust Him enough to keep moving forward, even when the way seems closed, or whether we will cancel the trip before He has had a chance to intervene.

The Gift of Unexpected Openings

When God steps in early, it is not just for our benefit. It is a reminder that He is paying attention, that the details of our lives matter to Him; and that nothing, absolutely nothing, is too small or too complicated for His care.

Two months later, standing in Washington, DC, looking at the monuments visitors travel thousands of miles to see, I felt a profound gratitude, not just for the trip itself but for the God who rearranged an operating room schedule to make it possible.

Sometimes the greatest testimonies come not from how we survived, but from how God prevented the crisis altogether.

Reflection Questions

  1. Is there something in your life right now where you have already decided the outcome? What might change if you left room for God to intervene?

  2. Where have you seen God step in early before in your life? What does that teach you about His character?

A Prayer for This Moment

Lord, thank You that You see the details of my life before I even bring them to You. Help me trust You with the outcomes I have already written off. Give me the courage to keep moving forward, believing that You are already at work. In Jesus' name, Amen.
