Do you ever wish you could open your Bible, point to a verse, and find God’s entire plan for your life written out? Something like a personal roadmap: who you will marry, what job you will have, where you will live, and how your story will unfold?
Wouldn’t that be amazing?
The truth is, God doesn’t usually work that way. Instead of showing us the full picture, He invites us to trust Him one step at a time. We see this beautifully illustrated in the life of Abraham. In Genesis 15:4, God spoke directly to Abram (who later became Abraham): “No, your servant will not be your heir, for you will have a son of your own who will be your heir.”
This was a clear promise. Abram didn’t have to guess or wonder if God had spoken. He knew exactly what God said, that his heir would be his own son. What Abram didn’t know was how long he would have to wait.
Fast forward about twelve years, Abram and his wife Sarai (who later became Sarah) remained childless. In their culture, this wasn’t only a personal disappointment. It was a deep shame. Sarai, now discouraged and impatient, decided to take matters into her own hands by giving her servant Hagar to Abram, and Hagar bore Ishmael (Genesis 16).
This “solution” may have felt logical at the time, but it wasn’t God’s plan. Instead of fulfilling God’s promise, it created conflict, jealousy, and pain that would ripple through generations.
Even after Ishmael was born, it would be another fourteen years before Isaac, the promised child, entered the world. Genesis 21:2 says Isaac was born “at the very time God had promised him.”
Notice the words “at the very time.” Not early. Not late. Not because Sarai’s plan worked, but because God’s timing is always perfect.
Looking at Abraham and Sarah’s story, it should be easy to see why God doesn’t lay out every detail of our lives in advance. We would probably get impatient, take control, and try to make things happen on our own terms, just like Sarah did.
Instead, God invites us to:
Seek Him in prayer.
Know Him through His Word.
Trust Him even when His promises feel delayed.
God may not speak audibly to you the way He did to Abraham, but His promises are still true. He promises never to leave you (Deuteronomy 31:6). He promises wisdom when you ask (James 1:5). He also promises peace when you bring your worries to Him (Philippians 4:6-7).
And just like Abraham and Sarah discovered, those promises will always come to pass, just at the time God says they will.
Prayer:
Lord, as I spend time with You, help me trust Your timing in every area of my life. Keep me from rushing ahead or trying to make things happen my way. Teach me to wait patiently and to believe that your plan is always good.
