God Uses Our Whole Story

God Uses Our Whole Story

There is something about the story of Paul that stops me every time I read it. Before he became the apostle who carried the gospel across the known world, Paul was a man convinced he was doing the right thing while actively opposing the work of God.

In the book of Acts, we meet him first as Saul, a zealous persecutor of the early church. He believed the followers of Jesus were dangerous heretics. So he set out to stop them. He approved of their imprisonment. He pursued them from city to city.
He was even willing to see them put to death.

Convinced he was defending truth, Saul set out for Damascus to arrest anyone who belonged to “The Way.” But on that road, everything changed. He met Jesus.

Blinded for three days, Saul was confronted with a reality he had never imagined: the very people he thought he was fighting against were the ones Jesus, the Messiah, called His own.

When his sight was restored, his life took a completely different direction. The man who once persecuted Christians became the one who carried the message of Christ across nations. Saul became Paul.

But here is something that struck me recently as I read this story again: Paul’s life did not suddenly become easy after his conversion. He was falsely accused, imprisoned, flogged nearly to death, and rejected by many who once trusted him.

He even carried what he described as a “thorn in the flesh,” something he pleaded with God three times to remove. God’s answer was simple: "My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness." 2 Corinthians 12:9 NLT

Paul suffered deeply. Yet through all of it, God used him in extraordinary ways. He preached the gospel across the known world and wrote a significant portion of the New Testament.

Looking at Paul’s life, one truth becomes clear:

God did not erase Paul’s past; He redeemed it.

The passion that once drove Paul to persecute believers became the passion that drove him to spread the gospel. The suffering he endured deepened his understanding of grace. The hardships he faced shaped the words that still encourage believers today.

God used the whole story, and that same truth applies to you and me.

Many of us carry chapters we wish had unfolded differently. We made decisions we now question, and there are seasons that left scars.

But the story of Paul reminds us of something important: God is not limited by our past. He is not finished with us because of our mistakes, and He does not waste the experiences that shaped us.

The very things we once feared disqualified us may become the places where God does His most meaningful work. Not for our glory but for His.

A Gentle Invitation

Instead of asking, “What did I get wrong?” try asking a different question this week:

“Lord, how might You use my whole story?”

You may be surprised by what He reveals.

Prayer

Lord, thank You that You are not limited by our past. Thank You that even the difficult chapters of our lives can become part of the story You are writing. Help us trust that nothing is wasted in Your hands. Shape our lives for Your purposes and Your glory. In Jesus’ name, amen.
