From Blisters to Resurrection: The Beauty of New Beginnings
What is one of your favorite childhood memories from Easter?
For me, it was always the new dress and shoes, the shiny patent leather ones that looked so pretty and always gave a blister the first time you wore them.
(That's two-year-old me in the photo. Notice the shoes?) Even then, Easter felt special. It marked something new.
Now, as I’ve grown older, Easter, or Resurrection Sunday as I love to call it, means something even deeper. It is a reminder that what once seemed dead can live again.
You can see it everywhere. Blossoms begin to appear on trees that just weeks ago looked lifeless.
Green pushes its way through what seemed barren and cold.
Creation itself whispers the truth of resurrection.
But the beauty of Easter isn’t just in nature. It’s in what God has done for us.
The greatest event in history unfolded just as it had been foretold centuries before. The prophets spoke of Him. The long-awaited Messiah came, yet many did not recognize Him.
Jesus came in human form, fully experiencing life as we do, yet without sin.
“He never sinned, nor ever deceived anyone.”
1 Peter 2:22 NLT
That matters, because He became our Passover Lamb.
In the Old Testament, during the first Passover, God instructed His people to sacrifice a spotless lamb and place its blood on their doorposts. When the death angel passed through Egypt, those covered by the blood were spared (Exodus 12). It was a foreshadowing; a promise; a glimpse of what was to come.
Jesus became that perfect Lamb for us. "Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” John 1:29 NLT
At the Last Supper, Jesus made it clear when He said, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” Then He took the cup and said, “This cup is the new covenant...an agreement confirmed with my blood, which is poured out as a sacrifice for you.” Luke 22:19-20
His body was broken, His blood poured out, and His life given for ours. Because of that sacrifice, we are no longer bound by sin.
“He was handed over to die because of our sins, and he was raised to life to make us right with God.” Romans 4:25 NLT
His death brought our freedom. His resurrection brought our hope. "Since I (Jesus) live, you also will live.” John 14:19 NLT
The miracle of Resurrection Sunday is not just that He rose, but that we can, too.
God is not finished with the places in your life that feel barren, forgotten, or beyond hope. New life is still His specialty.
So this Resurrection Sunday, as we celebrate with family, I’m reminded that life doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful.
One of my favorite pictures of Tom and me is with our four great grandchildren. Two are smiling, one is quizzically looking up at Papa and the other one is crying her eyes out. It's an expression of what happens in real life, which is anything but perfection.
Maybe that’s what resurrection looks like in our everyday lives. Not perfection, but life where there once was none.
A Gentle Invitation
So today, may we give praise, honor, and glory to the Lord for new beginnings, for hope restored, and for the promise of everlasting life.
“...anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!"
2 Corinthians 5:17 NLT
Happy Resurrection Sunday.
God bless you.
