Don't Let Overwhelm Take Away Your Joy: Finding Christ in the Flood
Have you ever had a season where life felt like one wave after another, each one arriving before the previous one had fully receded?
If you have, you're not alone, and I'm going to tell you something I discovered firsthand during the busiest season of my life in quite some time: joy is not the absence of demands. Joy is the presence of Jesus in the middle of them.
That discovery came after two months that tested every ounce of my faith, energy, and resilience. What I learned transformed how I view overwhelm: not as an enemy to defeat, but as a season where God shows up in ways I would never have expected.
Two Months, Countless Waves
June and July looked like this:
A trip planned for nearly a year with three other couples
Hernia surgery for my husband, Tom
A book fair I had prepared for over several months
A wedding moved from outdoors to a barn because of rain
Volunteering at a church camp serving four hundred children
A flight to California to bury my mom's ashes beside my dad's
The death of my only aunt
A brother-in-law's near-drowning that ended in a medical miracle
Hospital visits, doctor appointments, family gatherings, and travel across three states
At times I caught myself thinking, "Lord, when will this slow down?" And then I sensed Him gently correcting me. Not by calming the wave, but by reminding me that He was in it with me.
The Temptation to Pull Back
The temptation when life gets overwhelming is to pull back, to protect ourselves, to say "not now" to the very things God has placed in front of us. We think we're waiting for the perfect moment, the quiet season, the manageable schedule. But what if the overwhelm is actually an invitation? What if the busy, exhausting, grief-soaked, joyful season is exactly where God wants to use us?
I discovered something I want to share with you over the coming weeks. Joy is not the absence of demands. Joy is the presence of Jesus in the middle of them.
When I stopped waiting for the season to end and started asking, "Lord, what do You have for me here?" everything shifted. Not the circumstances; those stayed full and tiring. But my heart began to see each event, each person, each assignment differently. Not as demands on my time, but as opportunities to serve the God who placed them there.
Over the next six weeks, I'll be sharing stories from this season and what God has been teaching me. Each week, we'll explore a different aspect of what it means to find joy when life refuses to slow down.
This isn't about having all the answers. It's about having the right Company.
My prayer is that you will find encouragement here, and that together we will discover what it means to let joy remain even when life refuses to slow down.
"Don't be dejected and sad, for the joy of the Lord is your strength!" Nehemiah 8:10 NLT
That verse has become the backbone of this season. Notice it doesn't say, "Don't be sad because everything is fixed." It says the joy of the Lord is your strength in the sadness, in the mess, in the unresolved moments.
TIME OF REFLECTION
Take a moment to sit and reflect with these questions:
What does "the joy of the Lord" mean to you right now in your current season?
Where might God be inviting you to stop waiting for things to calm down and start looking for Him in the middle of it?
A Prayer for This Moment
Lord, thank You that You are present in every season, not just the quiet ones. When life feels like wave after wave, remind me that You are in the water with me. Teach me to see Your invitations inside the overwhelm, and let Your joy be my strength. In Jesus' name, Amen.
