The Beauty of Imperfect Plans: What Happens When God Rewrites Your Script
Not everything went the way I hoped during this busy season, but some of the best moments came from the things that didn't go as planned.
We love to talk about trusting God when life falls apart, but we rarely discuss what happens when life doesn't just fall apart; it transforms into something you never expected. Something better, sometimes, than what you originally planned.
Today I want to share two stories from my own journey that taught me something profound about imperfect plans and the God who shows up anyway.
The Book Fair That Wasn't
The day for the book fair I had been preparing for over several months finally arrived. I invested time, energy, and hope. I brought copies of Your True Origin Story, The Paris Room, and an anthology I had contributed to.
I also invited a twenty-year-old aspiring author to join me so she could experience what it's like to try and sell a book to complete strangers. I wanted her to see the realities: the rejections, the quiet conversations, the small victories.
The fair was not as successful as I had hoped. I sold very few books. My table didn't draw the crowds I'd imagined. The sales didn't match the preparation.
But here's what happened:
I made connections with other authors I would never have met had I stayed home
That young aspiring author got a taste of something that will shape her journey for years
I learned more about the publishing world through observation than I could have through success
A seed was planted for future collaboration that wouldn't have existed otherwise
The numbers didn't look impressive, but the relationships were genuine. The experience mattered more than the receipts.
The Wedding in the Rain
The second story involves the wedding of the daughter of long-time friends. It was originally planned to be held outdoors under a summer sky, but a steady, relentless, soaking rain came all day.
So they improvised by moving the ceremony inside the barn where the reception was already planned. Dusty beams, rustic walls, dim lighting, nothing like the garden venue they had envisioned. And you know what? It was beautiful.
We visited with family and friends we hadn't seen in years. The mother of the bride had poured her heart into making the occasion lovely, even in less-than-ideal circumstances. Every detail had been chosen with intention and love.
When the father stood up and sang a song for his little girl who was stepping into a new season of life, there wasn't a dry eye in that barn.
We danced. We laughed. We ate. We had a wonderful time. In a barn. In the rain.
What These Moments Taught Me
These two experiences, one disappointing by traditional measures and one miraculous despite appearances, taught me something: When our plans fail, God's purpose doesn't.
The disappointment may be real and the adjustment may be hard, but the God who determined your steps before you ever made your plan is not caught off guard by the change.
Proverbs 16:9 (NLT) says: "We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps."
I used to read that verse and feel a little discouraged, as if God were overriding my efforts. Now I read it and feel relieved because the truth is, my plans are limited by what I can see. God's steps are guided by what He knows.
Holding Plans Loosely
The book fair didn't go the way I planned, but God had connections waiting for me. The wedding didn't happen the way the bride's family planned, but God had a moment of beauty in a barn that an outdoor ceremony might never have matched.
Sometimes the most beautiful things grow in soil we didn't choose.
Here's what I'm learning:
Disappointment is honest. Don't pretend your plans don't matter. They do. But they don't have to become idols.
Detours have purposes. When you're redirected, you often see things you would have missed on the original route.
Presence matters more than perfection. God was in the barn. He was at the book fair. He is in your disappointments, too.
Relationships outlast events. The books I didn't sell won't matter in a year. The connections I made at that table might open doors years from now.
When You're Facing Imperfect Plans
Maybe you're holding tightly to a plan right now: a plan for your career, your family, your ministry, your health. And maybe that plan is starting to come apart at the edges.
It might be:
A job application that didn't lead anywhere
A relationship that ended when you hoped for marriage
A dream deferred because of illness or circumstance
An investment that didn't bear fruit
A season of life you envisioned that looked different in reality
But you know what? God is not disappointed in your failure. He is present in your adjustment.
I am not going to say everything will work out exactly as you hoped. I don't know what your specific situation holds. But I do know this: the God who met us in the rain and the quiet corners of a book fair is bigger than your plan.
Reflection Questions
Is there a plan you are holding onto that may need to be released? What might God do with the space that opens when you let go?
Can you remember a time when something fell apart and something better emerged afterward? What did that teach you about trust?
What would it look like to hold your expectations loosely while holding onto God tightly?
A Prayer for This Moment
Lord, thank You that You are not limited by my plans or by their failure. Help me hold my expectations loosely while holding onto You tightly. When things don't go the way I envisioned, open my eyes to see what You are doing instead. Give me the grace to find beauty in the unexpected and strength to trust You through the uncertainty. In Jesus' name, Amen.
